Prehistoric sites

The shelter of Aurignac was discovered in 1852 by Jean-Baptiste Bonnemaison and studied from 1860 by Édouard Lartet, one of the inventors of prehistoric science. These archaeological excavations, as well as those which he undertook in Massat, will contribute at the time to demonstrating the contemporaneity of Man with animal species disappeared, hypothesis advanced in 1851 by Jean-Baptiste Noulet.

In the site of Montmaurin was discovered a jaw dating more than 300 000 years.

The visit of the museum of Montmaurin is worth the detour by the richness of the finds of this village leaving guessing that it can become a library of the humanity by the conservation of the site since the night of time.
